Basic Types

- Rank Amateur -

This type of player most likely doesn’t yet have the skills and the experience. Thus, it’s best to play with care if against with this type of player. Avoid playing big pots when you don’t have a big hand. This type of player most likely doesn’t yet have an idea on what’s really going on around.

- On Tilt Player -

This type of player plays with much negative emotions and so can’t make good decisions. If you happen to play against this player and you have a hand, take advantage and throw rocks to this player by all means.

This type of player usually plays by the book and so can be so predictable in terms of starting hands and some patterns. If by chance you encounter this type of player, respect the obvious plays at hand and find means to go all the way to the pots. Think and play outside the box, you can beat this type of player.

- Chameleon -

No definable characteristics as well as patterns other than great understanding of the game and constant change in attitudes under various conditions.

If you know your chances of winning, you will most likely make right judgments and decisions. Thus, by all means, always know your chances.

Well, 52 cards are used in the game poker. Parameters are defined. You can now know the chances of a certain card or group of cards appearing at the table. And given that the chances of any sequence of cards or events appearing in the game are obvious, you can actually have precise calculations if you will win or not.

Calculation and the Probability

It is just easy for you now to calculate your chances of winning. Basically, you just have to deal with your “outs”. Well, an “out” is a card that will improve your hand and hopefully, will make it a winning one.

Now, say you are playing Texas Holdem and at the river. You have four hearts and want to make a flush and win the hand. Of course, you are waiting for your fifth card. In the deck there are 13 hearts in total and from your seat you can see four of these hearts. This means that only nine hearts are left to help you as you chase for a flush.

Six cards can be seen, four on the board and two in your hand. Thus, for the next card, there are 46 possible outcomes and nine are winning cards, or say “outs” for you. Now the probability for a flush is nine out of 46 or equivalent to 19.57%.

For some players, probability of nine out of 46 or equivalent to 19.57% already means no hope for winning. This probability is too vague. The figures are not good enough for them that they will still go on till the end and take risk.

If you have the edge, you can beat others in a poker game. Well, you can have an edge in terms of skills, experience, attitude, and knowledge. But among the four, the best, most important edge you can have is the edge in terms of knowledge. Naturally, when you have the knowledge about everything pertaining to poker, you can apply your skills, experience, and attitude effectively in various types of games and eventually go a long way.

How to Gain Knowledge?

Basically, you must do your homework to gain knowledge. Research, read, and observe. Research for new ways on how to play best at poker. Read plenty of sensible poker books, articles, etc. And finally, observe from various games. By doing these things, you will gain enough knowledge. You will gain enough information. And eventually, you will gain an edge.

Information to Consider

Of course, the sorting of information to familiarize won’t be easy. As you research, read, and observe you will encounter a lot of information and not everything is significant. Thus, be wise in sorting the information.

Well, information just like about basic player categories, number of hands a certain type of player is typically involved in, usual actions of a particular type of player, and the like are the information you can consider. These are the type of information that you must consider familiarizing.

There are some other information that you can consider which sometimes just pop up on the spot, just right at the table (if you observe in games). These include actions showing when a player is chasing against the odds, usual size of bet when bluffing, or hands most players consider to slow play. If once you encountered these information, do the jotting down. You may need to review such information later.

Poker is about gambling, about taking risk. Certainly, if you want to make it in this game you should know how to gamble, be a gambler.

Basically, there is no exact way to beat the game poker. There is no exact strategy to be applied, no exact skills, etc. What is just exact is that you need to be a gambler to beat the game.

In poker, you will have to place a share or a bet. And basically it is in this idea that being a gambler enters. Every time you place a share or bet, there is no guarantee that you’ll get something from it. Your share or bet can actually either make gains or trigger losses. It is important that you realize this. Because if you don’t, may be it’s time to reassess yourself, whether you are fit to play poker or not.

Although a Skillful Player

We truly believe that skillful players will win over time, but if they don’t acknowledge and embrace the gambling nature of the game then they might just find theirselves later on shipwrecked over and over again. Thus, acknowledge the gambling nature of the game and be ready to gamble. Whether or not you are skillful will really matter but poker is not just about being such.

Be a Wise Gambler

Yes, you need to be a gambler. But you need to gamble with right judgment of things some factors, etc. Nonetheless, be wise. Before gambling anything, consider things like your cards, your opponents’ cards, the odds, and the like. When you get yourself into a certain hand, consider assessing your cards whether they are better than someone else’s, if the flop will help you more than your opponents, etc. Remember, that in poker, you are only not wagering your money but also your reputation and time; well this depends on how seriously you take the game.

We promised that we will publish more poker strategies next to basic. And now, we’re starting to fulfill what we’ve promised.

Well, the first strategy we have here is about playing with confidence. We believe this is one of the strategies players should know first. You may actually think this is nonsense and so easy to do. However, in real sense this strategy is with so much sense and something that is really challenging to do.

We will provide more strategies in the following articles we are going to publish here.

Why Play with Confidence?

When you play with confidence, positive results usually follows. Basically, to have confidence is to have trust in yourself that no matter what your goal or aim is, you will surely achieve it. Naturally, once you have trust in yourself, everything follows. If in poker, although might be hesitant, you can lay down hands when you think you’re behind, even when you have a strong hand yourself. Similarly, with strong raises, you can pick off bluffs.

But be careful. Although playing with confidence can really help you, this may also mislead you. You of course will try to gain confidence and later might gain too much of it as you go your way. Having too much confidence won’t ever be a good thing. This may just lead you to aggressiveness which at certain type of games is not helpful.

How to Get Confidence?

To get confidence is not an easy thing to do, most especially if you are not that experienced and well-skilled. You may feel inferior and winning will seem be impossible for you. Well, there is no exact way to get or gain confidence. But looking on your strengths and appreciating them will really help. If you believe that you have your own strengths then confidence will just follow.

Because you opened this article, you most probably want to know some strategies. Well, we do actually have provided some strategies, however, they are only basic strategies. In the next batch of articles that we are going to publish here, we will provide strategies next to basic. We will have these strategies in full detail. But as of now, we’re just going to focus on the basic strategies we have below.

Some Basic Strategies

Stay patient until the end. Many players cannot stay patient all throughout, until the end of the game. They fail to realize that poker is not just about skills but also about attitudes. It pays to be patient all the time. A good hand typically comes later part of the game.

Be aggressive the right way. Sometimes, player needs to be aggressive. However, player needs to be aggressive the right way. If odds are not against him or her, then he can go all the way and risk but if odds are against him or her, then he or she must do the otherwise. Player must know when its best to be play aggressively and when not.

Never be afraid to fold. Many players don’t like the idea of folding. However, at times, it’s folding that’s the best thing to do. For an instance, a player’s hand is a beat and there’s someone who just won’t quit re-raising, what else is the remedy, well only folding. Thus, no one should ever hesitate to fold when he or she knows there is no chances of winning.

Watch over the pot. Every time the pot appears small, remember there is no need to stop. Play the hand. Even a good draw in a small pot is not worth the cost.

Get a feel for the hand of the opponent. This is indeed a tough one. Player must have great reading skills as well as analytical skills in order to accomplish this one. Reading skills involves reading of others’ moves, decisions, etc. Analytical skills mostly is about thinking of possible hand players can get considering the current board.

Our very recent articles are about online poker, so we’ll just keep ourselves in track. Now we have here the guidelines for online poker etiquette. We provided these so players most especially those starting players will know what behaviors are considered acceptable and not acceptable when playing poker online. Almost all players, if not all, will most likely try online poker at some point.

The Guidelines

Use of proper language. Some online players have failed to use proper language, instead they have used offensive one. Thus, future players should be aware of this. And they must use the proper language by all means. They must remember that online poker is an adult activity where only adult or say mature players are appreciated.

Be nice. It won’t a help a player if he or she is rude. Well, being rude can mean that he or she is having too much trash talk, or rubbing his or her opponent’s face in it when he or she have him or her beat. By being rude, he or she will just leave bad impression. Other players may avoid playing with him or her ever again. Thus, it’s best for him or her to be nice at all times.

Keep up with the pace of the game. Any player should try to keep up with the pace of the game he or she playing. To go slow will never help him or her. At best, he or she must make advance actions whenever it is sensible.

Play accordingly. A player must play just right. If during a hand, he or she must play accordingly. He or she must play the hand in accordance to the rule. And if just watching the action, he or she should not comment or say any piece of advice at all about the hand being played. It is clear that there should only be one player to a hand, and this must be clear to him or her nonetheless.

We have mentioned in one of our newly published articles here that players who are into online poker can actually chat if they wish to. All poker clients nowadays allow players to chat as long as there will be decency when it comes to words being used. Players have to follow some etiquette guidelines when chatting to ensure no chaos will ever occur at the table.

Nowadays, most players chat because of two things, they are bored and/or just want to meet new friends. Well, both things are sensible. However, there is something far better. It’s better if players chat because they want to leave a strong image and so other players might go on tilt or play worse.

Certainly, any player can use chat to his or her own favor. Aside from making a strong image so others will have a bad game, while chatting, player can also take time to notice players who are not in balance and are upset because of some bad streaks or cards. There are players who cannot control their emotions and very noticeable. Most of the time, they will take their emotions out on the chat. If feeling bad, they will take everything out through words they type on the chat box. Thus, you can use chat to know who are the players that are losing and winning.

But Be Careful!

Yes, you can certainly use chat to your advantage. But be careful as others may also use chat to their advantage so they can beat you. As you chat, be careful of your statements as you might get a weak table image so possibly you’ll get a lot of check-raises and calls from other others.

Similarly, never complain often as other players might just think that you are out of balance and so will start pulling moves on you. You might just risk tilting your own game.

Of course, every player has needs. At times, the player wants to take a break, chat when bored or would like to meet some new friends or at rare times, even adjust sounds or animation (if into online poker).

Taking a Break

A player often needs to take a break. Sometimes because he or she needs to go to the bathroom or else just plainly needs to have some moments away from the poker table because of pressure.

Well, a player who wants to take a break can actually just click on the “Sit out” button or check the “Deal me out next hand” check box. Options vary from one poker client to another. Basically, once allowed to take a break, player will be dealt out and won’t pay any blinds or antes. If he or she wants to go back and play, he or she just needs to click the “I’m back” button.

Normally, player is only allowed to sit out two rounds of blinds, which is 15 or more hands at a full table. If more than two rounds, player can’t go back anymore to play and his or her chips will be returned to his or her account.

Also, there are instances when the player misses the blinds while he or she’s having his or her break and when this happens, player either has to “make up the blinds” or otherwise wait for the blind to reach him or her naturally. When player wishes to make up the blinds, he or she should post an amount equal to the sum of the blinds.

Chatting

All poker clients nowadays allow players to chat with the other players. The player who wishes to chat with other players because of boredom or just wants to meet new friends can just look for the one-line text box near the text display area and start chatting. However, at times, player can only chat if he or she is not seated at the table or is restricted to chatting with seated players (depending on the poker client).

Adjusting Sounds or Animation

If a player has a problem with the sounds or animation on the screen, he or she can actually make some adjustments. Most poker clients nowadays will allow the player to turn on and off the sounds and the animation. He or she just needs to look for the “Options” menu on the lobby window or else on the dealer tray.

The betting rounds and the showdown are considered the most most important parts of a poker game. Usually at the betting rounds, the actions can be found. While at the showdown, its the thrill because it is in this part where the winner is revealed.

Betting Rounds

Yes it is true that at the betting rounds, the actions can be found. Players normally check, bet, call, raise, and fold. At times they also take the cash and run with the pot, however, usually this happens when the game is actually a home game.

If check, player declines to start the betting, but is still in the hand. No one has placed a bet yet. If bet, player decides to put his money into the pot. Other players after such player should call the bet, raise, or fold to the bet. Then if call, player wants to match the amount of the previous bet. If raise, player decides to bet even though someone has previously bet. Other players after such player should call the raise, re-raise, or fold. Finally, if fold, player declines to match the amount of the previous bet made by someone. Player opts that his or her hand be considered dead and therefore misses his or her chance to win the pot.

Showdown

Basically, at the end of the hand, the dealer initiates the showdown where the winner will be revealed. The dealer will first show the cards of the player who is obligated to be the first one to show cards. Every player then follows but will be given the chance to choose whether to show cards or just muck the cards without showing. The player with the greatest cards according to the rules of the game will be the winner.

At some poker rooms, winning player is revealed immediately to speed up the showdown.
